What is educational therapy?
Educational therapy targets the underlying issues that cause students to struggle to learn. It is intensive, individualized intervention that focuses on strengthening perceptual and cognitive skills deficits that have been identified through comprehensive testing. ET goes beyond tutoring; rather than teaching what to learn, educational therapy teaches students how to learn.
THRIVE’s educational therapist has received her training from the National Institute for Learning Development. NILD is a nationally accredited training organization for Educational Therapists and is officially endorsed by the International Dyslexia Association.
Who is educational therapy for?
THRIVE’s educational therapy services are for struggling learners with either diagnosed or undiagnosed learning disabilities. It is most effective for students ages 7-16 and for those with low average – above average IQs. A comprehensive assessment is needed before services can be provided. For struggling learners ages 5-6, SEARCH & TEACH® may be a more effective intervention.
Why educational therapy?
Instead of adapting the learning environment to a student’s unique learning struggles, educational therapy seeks to change the way a person thinks so that he or she can succeed in any environment. Rather than accommodating weak cognitive connections, educational therapy strengthens them. The goal is to build the competence and confidence of those who struggle to learn through implementing research-based, best practice interventions to bring lasting cognitive change.
